When to use a Social Story?

A social story can help prepare a child for new events by showing him what will happen and what he can do. In a way it is like a “dress rehearsal” for a new situation. They can be very helpful for situations that your child might dislike or be afraid of.

• Going to school
• Doctor appointment
• New baby

Social stories also teach positive behavior. If your child does not behave appropriately in certain situations a social story can help him learn how to behave in a more positive manner.

• Running away
• Hitting others
• Grabbing toys
